A very special guest speaker...
Gail Collins, New York Times columnist, made a special appearance at the Ann Richards School on Friday, October 30th. During her time at ARS, she spoke to the students about women's progress since the beginnings of the modern Feminist Movement in the 1960's. Her recent book,When Everything Changed: The Amazing Journey of American Women from 1960 to the Present, examines the fight for women's equality through the stories of those who were part of that history.

The Dear Michelle Project
This summer, Ann Richards School students participated in the Dear Michelle Project. They produced short films based on letters they wrote to Michelle Obama about issues they'd like to see change in our country.
Films by two Ann Richards School students - Amanda and Annalise focus on education. They would like to see more girls have an opportunity to go to a school like the Ann Richards School!

Dell contributes 30 Latitude 2100s to the school
On Tuesday, May 19th, Dell launched its NEW Latitude 2100 computer for students in London, Sydney and at our very own Ann Richards School. In fact, Mr. Murray's 6th grade science class was the first classroom in the world to use the them!
We were proud to host this event at ARS, and especially grateful for Dell's contribution of 30 Latitude 2100s to the school. The computers are made for kids and in the words of one student, AWESOME!

Star Band Member Alyssa Baquera to Perform at the Forgione Follies
Miss Baquera will be representing the Ann Richards Stars Band in a combined AISD Middle School Band to perform for the Forgione Follies,honoring Dr. Pat Forgione. The Performance will take place on May 27 at 7:00 pm at the Long Performing Arts Center.
Four Members of the Star Choir to Perform in the Forgione Follies
Four ARS Choir members who participated in the 2009 All-Region Choir have been invited to participate in the Forgione Follies at the Long Performing Arts Center on May 27 at 7:00 pm as part of the combined AISD Middle School Choir. These young ladies, Allison Sands, Tamsyn Stonebarger, Sydney Holt, and Iris Baughman will represent ARS at this farewell event honoring Dr. Pat Forgione.
Congratulations to the Symphonic Band!
The Star Symphonic Band won Second Division on their Concert and First Division on their Sightreading at the UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest at Taylor High School on April 1. Go Stars Band!
Are you ready for the 2nd Annual ARS School-wide Talent Show?
The 2nd Annual ARS School-Wide Talent Show is scheduled for June 2 at 6:00pm on the ARS Cafeteria Stage. Tickets are $5 for adults, and $3 for children. (kids under 5 are free) All proceeds go to benefit the ARS Choir, and a portion of the money raised will be donated to charity.
The 7th and 8th grade Singing Stars Treble Choir ROCKED at the UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest
They sang at the UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest at the Hays Performing Arts Center, and won Sweepstakes: the highest possible rating of a I (Superior) on their Concert, and a I (Superior) on their Sightreading. Way to go Singing Stars Choir!!!! We are one proud bunch of teachers!
Our 7th grade team won second place in the Paredes Basketball Tournament. Congratulations!

Poet and author, Naomi Shihab Nye
Poet and author, Naomi Shihab Nye visited the school. She conducted writing workshops with the 6th grade girls who just finished reading her book Habibi. Hear more about Nye's visit on the KUT website or read the News8 story.
Lily Tomlin visited the Ann Richards School students on Monday, September 29th.

The accomplished actress spoke to the 6th, 7th and 8th graders over lunch about her life and career. Ms. Tomlin was a friend of Governor Ann Richards and is a supporter of the school. Read more about her visit:

Citi Presents Check to Ann Richards School
Citi presented The Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders with a $25,000 check on Friday, September 26th.

Ms. Shamina Singh, COO Community Relations at Citi, Mark Niero, Community Relations, along with several Citi staff greeted an assembly of excited and grateful students. Thank you, Citi, for your investment in the girls at the Ann Richards School!

More ARS in the News
The Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders was rated exemplary by the Texas Education Association for the 2007-2008 school year. Ratings are based on student performance on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge & Skills (TAKS) tests. The school was one of two middle schools to be rated exemplary in the Austin Independent School District and one of only 87 middle schools to receive an exemplary rating in the State of Texas.
