Website Accessibility

The website for the Ann Richards School is constructed to be accessible to as many people as possible, including those who use assistive technology to brwose the web. Below is information about some of the features we have implemented. Please contact us if you have any problems accessing our content or have suggestions for improvements.

Semantic markup
Pages are constructed with valid XHTML, and use CSS for layout and appearance.
"Jump" links
We've included links within the page so that you can quickly navigate to the most important sections of the page: the main content area, the site navigation, section-specific navigation, and the top of the page.
Alt text
We've provided alternative text for informational images for the benefit of site visitors who use assistive technology, or have images turned off.
Changing the font size
Because font sizes are specified in relative units, you can change the font size in most browsers, usually in the "View" menu.
Elastic page layout
If you increase the font size in your browser, the layout of the page will automatically adjust its proportions to accommodate the larger text.
Tables
Tables are used for the display of tabular data only. For users of screenreaders and speech browsers, we associate headers with their respective rows and columns to aid comprehensions.
Forms
Forms have labels explicitly associated with their controls, aiding users of certain screenreaders and speech browsers.
Access keys
Because of conflicts with user agents and other applications, access keys are not used.
File Formats
We explicitly note file formats for any downloadable file such as PDFs and MP3s.
  • HTML (HyperText Markup Language): The Web browser-readable document format.
  • DOC (Microsoft Word): Documents formatted in Microsoft Word. A plug-in for viewing these files is available from Microsoft's Download Center.
  • PDF (Portable Document Format): A universal file format that preserves the look and layout of a printed document. Download the free Adobe reader.
  • MP3 (Moving Picture Experts Group-1 Audio Layer 3): Compressed music files.
  • Flash (Adobe Flash): Web video file. Download the free Adobe Flash player.
  • PPT (Microsoft PowerPoint): Slide show presentations. A plug-in for viewing these files is available from Microsoft's Download Center.
  • RTF (Rich Text Format): Text files with some formatting. A plug-in for viewing these files is available from Microsoft's Download Center.
  • VSD (Microsoft Visio): Documents formatted in Microsoft Visio software. A plug-in for viewing these files is available from Microsoft's Download Center.
